This is the ending to my all-time favorite episode of California’s Gold, where Huell explores the legendary firefall of Yosemite. It may be my favorite ending to anything ever on TV.

(Starts around 1:30. Poor quality transfer but it’s all I could find.)

Rest in peace, Huell Howser.

This is not Huell Howser. This is actually comedian James Adomian, in character as Huell. Adomian shared with KCET his thoughts on watching Huell, loving his endless enthusiams, doing the impression of him… and getting a phone call from Huell about said expression. Read it here.

Speaking of Carmageddon II: 5 Histories of L.A. Freeways

This weekend is Carmageddon II, when a 10-mile stretch of the 405 Freeway closes down for improvements and upgrades. Like last time, officials are asking the public to stay local. So here’s an idea to keep you busy at home (for a half hour, at least) and thinking about freeways in a historical context, thanks to our partnership with L.A. as Subject, which produces a weekly column on local history through archives.

The State of California’s Sea Otters
Adorable sea otter souvenirs—sweatshirts, posters, plush toys—abound in central and Northern California. They’re local icons, and with a face like that, it’s easy to see why.
